What is floating? Everything you need to know before trying it for the first time

Floating literally means drifting or floating on water. But what is floating as a wellness experience?Perhaps you have seen images of a spacious float room with warm water and a peaceful wellness environment and wondered:

What do you actually do during a float session?
Do you really float effortlessly?
Doesn’t it feel strange to spend time alone in a room like this?
And is floating right for me?

These are perfectly understandable questions. Floating is still unfamiliar to many people. That is why we would like to explain what floating is, how it works, what it feels like and what you can expect when you try it for the first time.

How does floating work?

During a float session, you lie in warm water containing a high concentration of Epsom salt (magnesium sulphate). The large amount of salt increases the buoyancy of the water, allowing your body to float effortlessly without having to support yourself.

You don’t need to know how to swim. You simply lie back and let the water support your body.

The water is kept at a comfortable temperature close to the temperature of your skin. After lying still for a while, the boundary between your body and the water can gradually become less noticeable.

What does a float session feel like?

Everyone experiences floating differently. Some people relax almost immediately, while others need a little more time to get used to the quiet surroundings.

There is nothing you have to achieve, and you don’t have to try to relax. You can move, change position and take your time finding what feels most comfortable for you.

That is one of the special things about floating: for a while, you don’t have to do anything at all.

What can you expect the first time?

Before your float, we calmly explain how everything works. You then take a shower and enter the water at your own pace.

Your first float session doesn’t have to be perfect. It is completely normal if your mind is still busy at first, if you need some time to get used to the quiet or if you simply want to discover how your body feels in the water.

Give yourself that time. Floating isn’t about achieving a particular result. It is about giving yourself a moment with fewer distractions and a break from the demands of everyday life.
